Process Mining – unlock the potential of your business process data with Apromore

You may have an idea of what staff should be doing in your business, but what are they actually doing? Discovering how your business operations conform to what your operating model expects, can deliver some very real surprises and benefits.

Whether you have an existing model of your operation or not, process mining is valuable in process discovery, conformance checking, performance mining and process variant analysis.

To obtain maximum value from a business operating system, such as Holocentric’s Business Management System, organisations must have a well-defined business operating model. The centrepiece of this model is the business processes undertaken by the organisation together with the people and systems that support them. A major hurdle for many organisations is the capture of existing processes, often requiring significant investment in time and resources. Using transactional event logs recorded by the IT systems in use within organisations, process mining can automatically discover business processes by data traces in these logs. In conjunction with workshops, observations and interviews, process mining can create an operating model rapidly and cost effectively.

Once the theoretical (or digital) operating model is captured, you can compare your current operations, as recorded in the event logs, against it and analyse the gaps. This conformance checking highlights discrepancies between what should be happening in the business and what is actually happening. Resulting investigation may reveal errors in system configuration, lack of or incorrectly applied business rules or the need for deeper staff training.

Process mining can also assist in identifying bottlenecks, waiting time, resource utilisation, re-work and other performance issues. This performance mining may also be used to suggest optimised and enhanced processes. Process performance measurement schemes may also be derived from data at this point and used for continuous improvement efforts.

Variants analysis between digital process models or actual process logs may be used to compare locations, business units, customer experience, governance differences and many more options. If a business process is not executing as expected across various stakeholders in the organisation, process mining can highlight opportunities such as process improvement (best-practice) and regional/cultural alignment.

Gartner have recently introduced the Digital Twin of an Organisation (DTO) concept to help business leaders prioritise, guide, plan, monitor, analyse and scale complex initiatives. Holocentric’s BMS may be used as a central core of a DTO ecosystem and process mining as the accelerating enabler to capture, validate, optimise and predict performance of the business processes.

To help organisations accelerate their adoption of a DTO and enable more mature DTO value concepts, Holocentric are partnering with the Apromore Initiative, from The University of Melbourne, to showcase process mining (PM) at the 2018 Gartner ITxpo/Symposium.  Holocentric’s BMS and the Apromore application will be demonstrated as part of our DTO offering.

Apromore is an advanced open-source process analytics platform offering a wide range of features which go beyond those for managing large process model collections, and include a variety of state-of-the-art process mining techniques, ranging from automated discovery through to variants mining and predictive process monitoring.
